I'm Caryn Nelson. Along with my husband Mike Nelson, and our partners Toby and Carrie, we have recently opened Guilder serving our coffee that we roast called Junior's Roasted Coffee. Guilder is located in the Lyon Building at 2393 NE Fremont St (between the Fremont Theater & soon-to-open Wild Pet Provisions). Mike moved to Oregon from Utah in 2001 with his family to attend high school in Tigard. I moved to Portland in 2003 from Philadelphia to attend PSU where I met Mike and Toby working at Food for Thought Cafe, a student run cafe on campus. Mike is our Director of Coffee and I oversee the administration, marketing, and HR for the cafe/roastery. Mike has worked in the speciality coffee industry for 13 years with companies in Portland, NYC and Sweden. He has also studied coffee production/coffee pests & diseases during two graduate programs in Sustainability Science, Environmental Science and Geography. In addition to working in hospitality, I've worked in the nonprofit field for 10 years with local organizations like the Hollywood Farmer's Market and Dress for Success Oregon. I've also served two terms as an AmeriCorps VISTA (like a domestic Peace Corps) working with statewide organizations promoting civic service, Days of Service and volunteerism.
We started roasting coffee as Junior's Roasted Coffee in Tallahassee, FL when Mike was in a PhD program at FSU and returned to Portland in the spring of 2016 to begin pursuing a location for the cafe. We were elated to be introduced to this space in the Alameda-Irvington neighborhood last December. The name of the cafe is inspired by the classic children's movie/book The Princess Bride. We live just up Fremont in the Roseway neighborhood and have enjoyed frequenting our neighbor businesses like Garden Fever and Lucca (& Perry's) in the past when we lived in other NE neighborhoods. The cafe is open 7am - 7pm and offers coffee, espresso, Smith tea, Tanglewood chai, juice, pastries from Fleur de Lis Bakery (where I worked 10 years ago), vegan/GF pastries from Shoofly Vegan Bakery in St. Johns and a small breakfast and lunch menu. We'll be expanding our menu soon when we offer alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, cider and cocktails). We're committed to working with and serving local when possible. We love supporting other small businesses and vendors, often our former colleagues and friends. Our business has from the beginning supported nonprofit organizations and projects that better the community. We are happy to donate coffee or services to your event or fundraiser when we can - just ask. Our company values include education, service and sustainability. We will be hosting educational opportunities focusing on coffee (farming, brewing, tasting) and other beverages in the near future. We welcome you to discover the vast world of coffee with us and develop your own passion for our favorite beverage!
We welcome your feedback, concerns, and help. We're still a new company and this is our "baby" (hence the 'Junior' in Junior's Roasted Coffee). We (along with many friends and family) have put a lot of work into this space and want to see it succeed. We want you to consider it your second home, and welcome you into our extended family and hope to be welcomed into your family.
